Supervising working learners

Value and impact of student employment

Student employment at ASU is an integrated working and learning experience, driven by ASU’s Charter and designed to impact student success. As a supervisor, you play a critical role in transforming student jobs into experiences that set them up for success in their future career.

ASU’s student employment data shows the impact of a student job

These findings highlight the opportunity before us: by intentionally designing and supporting student jobs, we can help students build career readiness and create experiences that go far beyond a short-term role. A student job can serve as a meaningful stepping stone toward long-term success.

Your role in ASU’s student success story

Supervising student workers is more than managing shifts and deadlines; it’s contributing to ASU’s mission of access, inclusion, and impact. When we treat student employment as an integrated learning experience:

What does intentional supervision look like?

  • Set clear expectations and goals.
Ask students what they hope to gain from the job. Share what success looks like in your unit.

  • Delegate meaningful tasks.
Challenge students to go beyond the basics. Let them lead a project, solve a problem, or present their ideas.

  • Give regular feedback.
A 10-minute check-in can help a student reflect on their growth and feel more connected to their work.

  • Connect work to skills.
Help students identify and articulate how their job builds career competency skills like communication, critical thinking, and professionalism
