ASU Hourly Employment Program

  • Hourly jobs are not subsidized by the federal government and are available to all eligible students.
  • The hiring department pays 100% of the student's wages.
  • Receive biweekly paychecks for hours actually worked in your department or enroll in direct deposit through My ASU under the Employee Self Service and Payroll & Compensation section.
  • Hourly earnings are considered taxable income by the IRS.
  • Hourly employment must stop two weeks after graduation or after a complete withdrawal from ASU.
  • You may apply for hourly employment positions throughout the year. New jobs are posted daily.

  • Hourly employment eligibility for student employment at ASU is restricted to U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens provided they are enrolled in one or more credit hours.
  • F-1 visa students must be enrolled full time or have permission from the International Students and Scholars Center.
    • Undergraduate students = 12 credit hours
    • Graduate students = 9 credit hours
  • J-1 visa students attending ASU under an academic exchange program must have permission to work from the International Students and Scholars Center.
  • J-1 visa students completing a degree at ASU must have permission to work from the International Students and Scholars Center.
  • Students with a visa classification other than "F" or "J" must have permission to work from the Human Resources office located at your campus.

  • Incoming students pre-registered for the fall semester may start working in an hourly position during the summer as soon as they are registered for the fall semester.

  • You may not work during the hours you are scheduled to be in class.
  • U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens may not work more than an average of 25 hours a week (or 62.5% FTE) over a rolling 12 month period. This maximum applies to the combined total of all jobs, including hours associated with stipends paid for services.
  • Graduate assistants may work a total of 20 hours a week.
  • International students with an F-1 visa are allowed to work 20 hours a week during the academic year and may not work more than an average of 25 hours a week (62.5% FTE) over a rolling 12 month period. The maximum applies to the combined total of all jobs, including hours associated with stipends paid for services. Employment during the summer is allowed only for students who are registered full time for the subsequent fall semester.

Off-Campus Employment Program

  • Part-time, off-campus employment opportunities with employers throughout the metro Phoenix area.
  • All terms of employment are strictly between the student and the employer.
  • Due to the volume of off-campus hourly jobs posted, we are unable to verify the integrity of each employer listing a job through this program. Therefore, use caution and common sense when applying for a position with any organization or residence. Do not put yourself in a vulnerable situation.

  • U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen enrolled for one or more credit hours.
  • International students on a visa must have permission from the International Students and Scholars Center before applying for any off-campus job.
  • As an international student, you may apply for jobs with employers located on your campus by contacting them directly (availability may vary by campus — Memorial Union vendors are an example of potential employers at the Tempe campus).
Work +

Student employment as ASU: A Work+ framework

At Arizona State University, student employment is guided by the Work+ framework, a university-wide initiative that transforms on-campus jobs into high-impact learning experiences.

With Work+, you will receive:

Tips to make the most of your job

  • Set goals
Meet with your supervisor early on to align your job responsibilities with your academic and career goals.

  • Ask for feedback
Regularly seek input from your supervisor on your performance and growth opportunities.

  • Use ASU resources
Explore LinkedIn Learning, Work+ resources, and other professional development tools.

  • Reflect on your work
Identify the skills you're building and how they apply to your future.

  • Take initiative
Look for opportunities to lead, solve problems, or take on new tasks.

  • Tell your story
Practice articulating what you've learned, how you've grown, and how your on-campus job prepared you for what's next. Being able to explain how your role connected with specific career competencies gives you a clear professional-narrative advantage.

Student Employment Project Portal

ASU departments offer paid, short-term projects (15–30 hours) that allow students to build skills, earn income, and gain experience on a flexible schedule.
